Charger wins collegiate golf nationals

Jared Callbeck of the Camosun Chargers wins the 2014 PING CCAA Golf National Championships in Quebec City

Jared Callbeck captured the Camosun Chargers’ first ever individual championship at the 2014 PING CCAA Golf National Championships in Quebec City on Saturday.

The Chargers team finished second, its fourth all-time silver medal. That will be be added to their collection of national podium finishes which include two golds and one bronze.

Callbeck (Claremont secondary) finished Day 2 of the three-day tournament one shot ahead of second-place Hugo Bernard of Cégep André-Laurendeau. He clinched the win when officials deemed the course unplayable due to rain on Day 3.

“I’ll take it but it was kind of disappointing because our team was only three shots out of first and we felt we could have won,” Callbeck said.

This is Callbeck’s last semester at Camosun, as he is graduating from the business administration program with an accounting major. Callbeck plans to remain amateur and will look to defend his titles at the Cedar Hill and Gorge Vale opens next year.

“It’s nice to get the individual win in my last college tournament but we were also disappointed it ended early.”

Third-year Charger Grant Maskiewich of Smithers also played very well, finishing the tournament at 3-under-par, tying for fourth and a spot on the CCAA National All-Star team.

“We won the (team) silver but conditions made it impossible to play for the gold,” comments Chargers head coach John Randle.

“… (Callbeck) and (Maskiewich) anchored our team and had put us in great position going into the final round. I feel like our team was just starting to play their best and believe we would have played well in the third round if it had gone.”

The University of the Fraser Valley will host to the 2015 CCAA National Championships in Abbotsford.
