It was slow start and a sudden death ending for the Golden Rockets when they faced the Kelowna Chiefs on Dec. 1.
Both teams played a sloppy first period of hockey which saw the Rockets only get six shots on net. The Chiefs jumped out to a first period 1-0 lead on a goal from Nick Josephs.
The lead held up until late in the second period when Rockets winger Keith Wake notched his twelfth goal of the season. The Rockets then started off strong in the and took the lead a little over a minute into the third period. Jacob Bergeron scored his fourth goal in six games to put the home team up.
Things stayed this way until the Chiefs tied things up with less than a minute left on the clock and their own net empty. Brady Mende’s goal sent the game to overtime. Mende stepped up again in the overtime and with 1:52 left on the clock scored to give the Chiefs a 3-2 win.
After the game, Rockets Head Coach Ty Davidson said he wants the team to bear down on their scoring chances when the come up.
“I have been happy with the way we have been playing overall. I thought tonight we were very slow to get going and I thought we muddled our way through it until the third period where we controlled the play but again failed to score on our chances and put them away,” he said. “Then boom, they pull their goalie and get a scoring chance and its in the net. Then we obviously didn’t get it done in overtime. We should have won that game tonight.”
