Chilliwack Chiefs acquire forward Cam Johnson in multi-player swap

Three teams were involved in the wheeling and dealing to bring the 16-year-old to the Chiefs

It’s not often a team gets to trade for a player that’s already in the building, but that’s what the Chilliwack Chiefs have done.

The BCHL club struck a deal with the Langley Rivermen for Cam Johnson, a forward who was with them for the 20 game POD season.

Based on how much they had to do to make it work, it’s obvious the Chiefs like the soon-to-be 17-year-old.

Chilliwack hockey boss Brian Maloney got the ball rolling by sending brothers Brody Gagno (2002-born defenceman) and Ty Gagno (2003-born forward), to the Prince George Spruce Kings in exchange for forwards Andrej Kovacevic (2003) and Ryan Upson (2001).

“We want to thank Brody and Ty for their contributions on and off the ice.” Maloney said as that deal was completed, “We wish them all the best in Prince George, and know they will do extremely well there.”

Maloney then turned around and flipped Kovacevic and Upson to Langley for Johnson.

Johnson, who is already committed to the NCAA’s Harvard Crimson, was with the Chiefs on loan from the Rivermen, who opted out of the BCHL POD season. The Vancouverite saw significant minutes with Chilliwack and produced three goals and 11 points in 20 outings. Despite his young age, Maloney hinted at him being a significant part of the Chiefs offence in 2021-22.

“We are really excited to add Cam to our roster moving forward. He is a high-IQ player that has a willingness to go to hard areas of the ice and fight for space.” Maloney said. “Cam will be leaned on heavily to produce offence for us next season and we know he is ready to take on that challenge.”

Johnson will return to Chilliwack in September for the start of training camp.
