Victory Shumbusho and his UBC Thunderbirds are the top-ranked men’s soccer team in the Canada West conference according to the pre-season coaches poll released Monday.
Shumbusho, a Chilliwack native heading into his second season with the T-Birds, is a big reason for the hype after posting nine goals and 18 shots on goal as a rookie last season.
Shumbusho’s team earned eight of a possible 12 first place votes, good for 139 points. The Alberta Golden Bears received four first place votes and finished second with 134 points. The Trinity Western Spartans placed third in the poll with 121 points.
Shumbusho plays a quasi-home game when UBC opens its regular season slate Aug. 31, visiting the University of the Fraser Valley.
