Chilliwack sports events cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns

Chilliwack's Masters Swim Club is the latest to pull the plug, cancelling a March 20 meet.

Another significant sports event bites the dust over COVID-19 concerns.

The Chilliwack Masters Swim Club was due to hold its annual March Madness meet March 20 at the Landing Leisure Centre.

The province announced a ban on gatherings of 250 people or more late Thursday afternoon.

Soon after, the local club made the decision to pull the plug, sending this note to participants:

“In an abundance of caution we are regretfully cancelling our “March Madness” 2020 swim meet. We want to thank you for considering us in your swimming plans and hope to see/hear from you in the future. Because of the upcoming provincial championships we will not be rescheduling the meet this year.”

Chilliwack Minor Hockey also cancelled a large event this weekend.

Saturday was supposed to see four local championship games as part of ‘Hockey Day in Chilliwack.’

But Hockey Canada announced a blanket cancellation of all events.

“We would like to say that we will do this another day, but at this point there is no sense in making any plans as to what we will do as there are more important things going on than just hockey,” said CMHA Brittany Rhodes in an email.
