Chilliwack swimmer Carson Olafson helped his Canadian crew to a sixth place finish at the FINA World Championships, which were held July 15-30 in Budapest, Hungary.
The Chilliwack Spartans grad represented his country in the 4×100 and 4×200 metre men’s freestyle relays, hitting the water July 23 for heats.
Olafson and teammates Yuri Kisil, Markus Thormeyer and Javier Acevedo qualified for the final of the 4x100m with an eighth place finish. Olafson covered his leg in 49.07 seconds, then shaved his time to 49.05s in the final. His team clocked in at 3:15.25, a little over five seconds behind the time posted by the first place team from the United States (3:10.06).
Two teams in the final, the Australians and Italians, were disqualified.
Olafson and company did not fare so well in the 4x200m relay, failing to qualify for the final.
With Jeremy Bagshaw taking the place of Acevedo, the team finished 14th in heats with a time of 7:17.36.
Poland snapped up the lowest qualifying time at 7:10.53.
On the bright side, Olafson swam his leg in 1:48.64, fastest of the four Canadians.
