Chilliwackians help Fraser Valley dominate

The Fraser Valley zone easily won the most medals at last weekend's BC Winter Games in mission, with lots of help from local athletes.

Chilliwack athletes helped the Fraser Valley zone easily top the medal table at last weekend’s BC Winter Games in Mission.

Collectively, Fraser Valley athletes racked up 103 medals including 30 gold, 33 silver and 40 bronze.

That was 26 more than second place Vancouver-Squamish.

Chilliwack gymnasts Brienna Gaspar and Ella Palmer both made the podium.

Competing in female category one, Gaspar was fourth on the floor and uneven bars, and first on the balance beam. Her all-around score was good enough for gold.

Palmer competed in female category two.

She was third on the vault, first on the floor and third all-around.

Brad Hagkull coached the Fraser Valley reps to gold in wheelchair basketball. His son, Benjamin Hagkull, played for the Fraser River-Delta team that finished third.

Tammy Miller coached the Fraser Valley karate team that placed second in boys’ team kata.

Sardis Flyer speedskaters Rebekah Clemons and Dominique Hawkenson battled it out in the girls U-16 500 metre race. Clemons and Hawkenson finished 2-3 in their first race, separated by just eight-tenths of a second. They placed 2-7 in the final standings.
