Chilliwack’s Deanna Tuchscherer etches name in UFV basketball record book

The freshman forward for the Cascades is making a strong case for rookie of the year honours.

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team has been competing in the Canada West conference since 2006, and no one has pulled off what Deanna Tuchscherer did last week.

The Chilliwackian made history in a win for her UFV Cascades over the Trinity Western Spartans Jan. 16.

The GW Graham grad poured in 35 points, setting a new UFV record for points in a Canada West conference game.

The previous mark of 32 was held by two players. Shayna Litman had 32 points in a Feb. 2, 2018 game against the University of Manitoba and Jane Meadwell scored 32 in a Nov. 28, 2009 game against Brandon University.

Tuchscherer fell 10 points shy of the UFV mark for scoring in any kind of game (in the Canada West era, since 2006). Carmella Silvestri exploded for 45 points, including 10 three pointers, in an Oct. 13, 2007 exhibition game against Capilano.

Tuchscherer’s team is in Calgary this weekend for two games against the Mount Royal Cougars.
