Chilliwack’s Jackson Gardner starts Canada West soccer season with shutout

The second year Thompson Rivers U keeper backstopped his team to a 5-0 win over the UVic Vikes.

One game, one clean sheet for Chilliwack’s Jackson Gardner, who backstopped the Thompson Rivers University men’s soccer squad to a 5-0 win over the University of Victoria Sunday in Kamloops.

The game was the Canada West season opener for Gardner’s WolfPack, who got three goals from Penticton native James Fraser.

Gardner, A Sardis secondary grad who is entering his second season of university soccer, stopped eight shots to earn his third career U-Sports shutout.

His team outshot Victoria 20-8 (11-1 in the second half) and had five corner kicks to the Vikes three.

Gardner’s WolfPack hit the road this week, visiting Langley’s Trinity Western Western Spartans on Friday. Gardner plays a quasi-home game Saturday when TRU takes on the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford.

Game time for that one is 7 p.m.
