Volleyball is the sport being served up this week, as we check on results from both elementary and secondary school teams from the past season…
We start with girls’ competition this week, beginning with the elementary school bantam (born 2001-02) age division.
For teams from schools with a population of more than 275 students, Mike Lundine was the league coordinator. Post-season playoffs concluded with North Cedar Intermediate defeating Hammond Bay in the final. On the championship team were players Cassidy Vey, Mady Crow, Mady Rypma, Kylynn Salmon, Kenya Huneault and Madison Boyda. Coach for the North Cedar girls was Stephen Epp.
In third place came Mountain View, coached by Darren Brick. Representing their school were players Jessica Baxter, Manroop Dhaliwhal, Kylisha Kasook, Mia Bond, Paige Brandback, Kassandra Chee, Charlie Creed, Danae Doiron, Hanna Doyle, Holly Fulton, Celia Leaf, Sydney Marriott, Jordynn McCallum, Emily Owen and Rebekah Walton.
Glen Murphy was the coordinator for the girls’ volleyball league for teams from smaller schools. Playoffs culminated with a tournament hosted at Brechin Elementary, with Cinnabar Valley taking top honours. On the winning team were players Alyssa Schan, Stephanie Bagosci, Sydnee Keeping, Tessa Hughes, Jasmine Taschereau and Mykaela Dick. Coach for the girls was Annette Noble.
Runners-up at the tournament were the Seaview Elementary team of Kenzie Alyward, McKenzie Belyea, Alex Berry-Dillen, Rachel Cole, Alexia Lindsay, Gwen Pemberton and Paige Standing. Coaches were Mike Biggs, Tania Sertic and Cherie Alyward.
The Gabriola team coached by John Donald took third place. Representing their school were players Cassie Carnichael, Ayla Georgeson, Rachel Hamilton, Tess Hamilton, Ruby Jarvis, Eva-Luna Jutras, Izzy Macklin, Alexis Parsons, Frankie Pothier, Anais Smith, Virginia White and Shelby Wuitchik.
In secondary school volleyball this year, several girls’ teams did well. Leading the way was the AAA senior girls’ squad from Dover Bay. Coached by David Nelson, the Dolphins placed second in the Island championship and went on to a sixth-place finish at provincials. On the Dover Bay team were players Amanda Dobbyn, Elise Angelucci, Rose Plensky, Rachel Therrien, Zoe Dendes, Hayley Goodwin, Misa Gillis, Emily Davies, Audrey Mitchell, Mikayla Herring-Pletsch, Danielle Frinton, Samantha Chwelos, Madison McDonald, Amy Smith and Madeline McIntyre.
At the AA level, top local team was the Woodlands Eagles. The Eagles advanced to the provincial championships at Brentwood College, finishing 16th overall. Represending Woodlands were Keira Christensen, Imaan Gill, Rebecca Harder, Kameron Smith, Laura Wicks, Ebony Jepson, Emily Coutu, Madison Mitchell, Kierra Anderson, Jane Robinson, Mikayla Anderson and Ireland Carter. Coach for the team was Ryan Orton, assisted by Ryne Barton.
