Hardly happy about being relegated to the bottom five, Turn-Key Controls appear serious about winning the Capri Insurance Men’s 45+ Soccer League’s B Cup anyways.
Newbie Tim Clarke was fabulous in net and Turn-Key got goals from their main offensive threats in a 3-0 win over Bosman Accounting Monday night at Marshall Field #2. Turn-Key is 4-0 in the double round-robin.
Ruben Cervantes and Volker Otto combined to feed speedy Roland Riedstra, who rambled down the right side and converted a 15-yard scorcher past former teammate Yogi Kongsdorf in the fifth minute.
Rick Danyluk of Turn-Key had a great chance after a pass from Mark Wasyluk but shot it over the net. Parm Kler struck the Bosman post, while Ian Bos had a wonderful chance from 18 yards but sailed it over Kongsdorf.
Bosman played a bold second half with slick striker Carl McLennan shooting wide on two short breakaways and getting stoned by Clarke’s fists on another. McLennan took the Winners Man of the Match for the 2-2 accountants.
Clarke lept up and tipped a 35-yard dipping free kick by Mike Grace just over the bar in the 74th minute. Clarke took the Big O Tire Man of the Match for the Controllers.
Just minutes later, Mark Wasylyk headed a pass to the top of the crossbar and then Bryan Schenker neatley tipped the ball into the net on a short pass by Wasylyk. Brad Conlin started the play.
Wasylyk buried the final goal on a sweet feed by Schenker. Bos earned the second assist.
In A side play, Silver Stars and Sunshine Pool & Spa battled to a 2-2 draw at immaculate Marshall #5.
The Stars went ahead on a goal by Gary Baker midway through the first half when he controlled a nice cross from Barry Mackay and stroked a shot into the bottom corner.
The Stars looked like they were going up by a deuce when Ian Murphy fed a wide open Dave Howes six yards out, but stogie-smoking keeper, keeper Chris Turbitt stopped both the initial shot, and then cleared a rebound offering.
Injured Rick Ito, normally a defender, was placed to pasture as the lone Sunshine striker and he broke ageless Al Bensmiller’s shutout bid to level the score in the second half, while the Stars defenders were busy watching for the offside flag to go up, and later put Sunshine up 2-1 with his second snipe of the half.
After Murphy missed a tap in of his own from the six, Baker equalized off a cross from Randy Driediger. After a swing and miss on his first shot attempt froze Turbit, Baker went top cheddar.
Mike Clarke had a strong game for the stars, cleaning up numerous chances from his sweeper position.
Both squads played with light rosters, with Sunshine managing to cobble together 12 players, many who should have reste.
Sunshine gave special mention to the Stars who donned bibs over their jerseys on a hot summer night.
“Field five was in lovely shape,” said Steve Manlove of Sunshine. “Vernon needs to sign up the new greenskeeper at Marshall Fields to a long-term contract.”
The Okanagan Spring Brewery Camels used a late dramatic comeback to gain a 2-2 draw with Brandt’s Creek at Mission Sports Fields.
Blair Gautschi put the Pubbers up 2-0 early in the second half after a scoreless opening 45 which saw Camel keeper Dave Dutcher stop two breakaways, taking a knee to the head on one.
Injured defender Ron Krause waddled up front to give the Humpbacks 11 men in the second half and helped set up Gord Howard’s goal from five yards. Dave Houghton started the play with a free kick from the Spring 30, Krause dummying the ball to Johnny Orton, who fed Howard.
Orton took a sweet through ball from Darren (Happy) Hansen and nailed the equalizer. Orton was then denied on two late breakaways.
Orton was named the Sleeman’s Man of the Match for Spring, honourable mention going to tireless right winger Dave Dawson.
In other A side play, Tony Gonzales bagged a pair as Brown Benefits bounced the North Country Appraisals Kickers 5-0, while in B side action, Grant Turik and Tim Moore each connected twice as the Rented Mules ambushed Taco Time Cantinas 4-0.
Gonzales supplied the opening goal when he pounced on a rebound in the early minutes of the game at Mission #11. Gonzales was then hauled down in the box to set up a penalty shot that was converted by his striking partner, Lionel Hoffman.
Another penalty shot was awarded towards the end of the half when a rather impressive handball by a North Country defender gave Chris Young the chance to get his second of the year from the spot, which he coolly slotted bottom corner.
North Country came out with more energy in the second half and pressed the Brown’s backline but were caught on the counter attack when Gord Brown’s pinpoint cross found a streaking Gonzales at the near post with a diving header.
North Country keeper Dave Gadd had a great game and made an incredible stop on a fierce shot by Don Brown in the dying minutes. He dove brilliantly to his right and tipped the ball onto the bar but the rebound fell right to the foot of Hoffman who tapped it into the open net.
The Rented Mules won their second straight with the speed of the Mules being the difference on the night. The Mules struck 20 minutes in, when a good pass from Brian Rea found Turik, who then fed a great ball through to Al Ryder who beat the keeper.
The Mules scored two more before the half, with Tim Moore and Burger King Man of the Match Turik each converting good passes from Al Ryder. Cantina’s dominated possession for the first 15 minutes of each half, but the Mules’ back four, led by Mike Daley and Donovan Hare, gave their opponents few sights of goal.
Elderly Mule Jim Denton had promised to buy beverages for the team if they could beat his former team, and the third goal saw him trudge to the parking lot in search of the players’ just rewards. Moore got his second of the night to complete the scoring, by which time Denton and his treasure chest had returned.
