Cloverdale hosts provincial PeeWee AAA baseball championships this weekend

Ten teams converge at Cloverdale Baseball Park July 31 to Aug. 3. The winner will represent B.C. at the nationals later this summer.

Cloverdale Minor Baseball Association plays host to B.C.’s best 13 and under teams this weekend when the Pee Wee AAA provincials get underway.

The championships run July 31 to Aug. 3 at Cloverdale Baseball Park, 17383 61 Avenue.

Ten teams from Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Burnaby, Cloverdale, Coquitlam, Vancouver, and Victoria are taking part in the event.

It’s free to watch. A concession will be set up, and, “We’re promised good weather,” said Jeff Young, of the Cloverdale Minor Baseball Association.

The championship brings together the top teams from around the province. Jeff Young, of Cloverdale Minor Baseball, says the Pee Wee AAA division represents the top tier 12- and 13-year-old boys and girls from each association.

The winner will represent B.C. at the national championships in London, ON, Aug. 21 to 25.

First up at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 31 is Richmond vs. Vancouver Minor, and Abbotsford vs. Coquitlam-Moody.

Cheer on the hometown Cloverdale Spurs at noon, when they take on Aldergrove in Pool A action. Burnaby Minor and White Rock also play at noon.

Victoria Black Eagles play Richmond at 3 p.m., the same time Victoria Red and Abbotsford hit the field.

The Spurs tied for fourth place in the summer league. (The Richmond Chuckers placed first.)

TheĀ  Cloverdale AAA Spurs players areĀ  mostly 13 year olds, with just three players who are 12. “A uniqueness is we have the only girl in the tournament,” he added.

Games between both pools continue Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The teams that are in first place in the A and B pools play the teams in second place in their respective pools on Sunday, Aug. 3 starting at 10 a.m.

The winners meet in the final at 2 p.m.

Young said the Cloverdale Minor Baseball Association is deeply grateful to the local sponsors who have helped make hosting the championships a reality. “Without their support, it wouldn’t be a success.”
