Gary and Shirley Geiger used to coach their daughter, Marla, in junior curling. They did such a good job that Marla (now Mallett) won three Canadian and World junior titles.
Knowing the importance of coaching was why the Geigers and the Peachland Curling Club donated money to junior programs throughout the Okanagan when the club dissolved in March.
The Vernon club’s Junior Rockslide Curling Camp picked up a $4,700 cheque, personally delivered by the Geigers to club manager Dave Merklinger.
“We know Merk and we coached and co-ordinated juniors in Williams Lake, and juniors are the backbone of the sport,” said Shirley, past president of the Peachland club which burned down in 1974.
The club, using insurance money, began raising funds in 1992 in hopes of constructing a new building. A referendum in May of last year to borrow $1.3 million to add to a government grant of $2.6 million for a curling club and multi-use facilily, was voted down 1,303 to 633.
Peachland club president Eddy Kyjanka and directors voted to split their remaining assests between junior programs in Peachland, Kelowna and Vernon.
“It’s a sad day for the Peachland Curling Club,” said Merklinger. “I’ve known Gary and Shirley for years and I know they put a lot of work into trying to get a new club for Peachland. I’m flattered that they thought of us.”
Peachland residents curl in either Summerland or Kelowna. The Geigers are considering a move to Vernon in the near future.
