Club nationals hit the court at Langley Events Centre

Thirty teams in three age groups battling for Canadian bragging rights

Canada’s best teenage girls basketball teams will be determined in Langley this weekend.

Thirty teams — competing in the U13, U15 and U17 age groups — from across Canada will hit the hardwood for the inaugural national club basketball championships.

“We want the basketball community to go east-west instead of north-south because all of the basketball clubs throughout the country go north-south,” explained Paul Langford, one of the tournament organizers.

The tournament kicks off on Friday and runs through the weekend with the championship games set for Monday.

Langford said the idea has been floating around for the past 15 years or so, which gained traction this past year.

“We want to get the word out and then move it around the country,” he explained. “And we thought the Langley Events Centre was the premier facility to start it off and get it going.”

The event will also be hosted at the LEC in 2018 with more teams expected, and perhaps the addition of a boys’ side of the draw.

“The interest we have created for next year is unbelievable. We want to have a really good event and build on it for 2018,” Langford said.
