The kids from Sandy Shores Skating Club have been a busy bunch, with lots more to look forward to.
The longtime local club was well represented at the big annual Autumn Leaves competition in Kamloops (Oct. 14-16), and the VI Regionals in Port Alberni (Oct. 28-30).
SSSC had five skaters qualify for the BC/YT Section Championships in Kelowna Nov. 9-13
IN OTHER NEWS Sandy Shores will be hosting a ‘Come Skate With Us’ event Saturday, Dec. 10 from 11:15am – 12:15pm. “We will be showcasing our Learn to Skate Programs (and) we invite the community to come out and see what our programs have to offer,” says SSSC president Launie Elves. Those taking part in this event will need skates, helmet and gloves.
“There’s a lot going on,” confirmed long-time SSSC co-coach Leslee Rushton who has been running the club with husband Larry since 1987, the made the point they had twice as many skaters representing SSSC at the VIRs’, “so it shows the right direction for our club’s rebuilding program,” said Larry.
Skate Canada points out Larry, has changed the qualifying criteria for skaters working their way into and up through the competitive stream, “which will make it easier for late bloomers.”
JUST DESERTS
A reminder Sandy Shores is hosting a Desert Night and Christmas Concert on Ice on Wednesday (Dec. 7) from 6-7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Place.
Admission is by donation, which includes a desert and a beverage all being served by the skaters.
“It’s a great chance to see the skaters perform,” said Leslee, adding club members will be performing solo routines “and some Christmas group numbers.”
The Christmas fundraiser will showcase the SSSC skaters “and will be a fun night for all,” said Elves, pointing out the club will also be raffling off Canucks tickets at the event.
And through it all, the club’s members are also busy preparing for the big bi-annual Ice Show in March.
In April, SSSC and Oceanside Place will be hosing a VISI Pond to Podium Super Series event for the second straight year, and further ahead Parksville will play host to the BC/YT Section Championships (Provincials) in November 2012.
