Comox Valley athletes shine at America’s Masters Games

Comox Valley competitors were among the 5,000 athletes from around the globe who participated at the inaugural America’s Masters Games recently held in Vancouver.

Among the highlights:

In athletics, Terri Jones won bronze in the 55+ women’s category for shot put and javelin. A 50+ men’s soccer team with Ron Quilter’s Islanders came second in a narrow defeat.

Hugh MacKinnon’s men’s 55+ won gold in men’s basketball, Wendy Johnstone jumped back on a field hockey team with some of her past teammates, and Karene McGill and Jill Nelson won bronze in ladies doubles tennis in the 45+ age group.

Local teams are now preparing for the World Masters next August in New Zealand. The next America’s Masters Games will be held in four years in Japan.
