The Comox Valley Cycle Club and the CVCC Time Trial series celebrate 25 years this summer.

In 1986 a small group of hardcore cyclists united to form the Comox Valley Cycle Club to encourage cycling and bike racing by providing support and events for local cyclists. One of the first events was a weekly time trial series. It started with a short out-and-back down Headquarters Road. Today, 25 years later, the series is still going strong.

The CVCC notes the 25th edition of the popular time trial series is year sponsored by Trial Bicycles. The series starts Wednesday, May 4 at the corner of Headquarters and Rennison Road for a quick out-and-back on the course that started it all.

Time trials are the simplest type of bike race. No special equipment is needed and you don’t have to race in a large, unruly group of cyclists.  It’s just you against the clock.  Cyclists start at one minute intervals and go as fast as they can over the length of the course. All you need is a bike, an approved helmet and a little determination. It is the perfect event for cyclists new to bike racing.

The Trail Bicycles TT series runs every Wednesday at 6 p.m. all  summer except June 30 (Canada Day). Registration begins at 5:30 on the start line. The series rotates among three courses: Headquarters, Dove Creek (a short loop) and Forbidden Plateau (a bit of a climb).

“This year we are also trying something new, a team time trial,” a CVCC spokesperson said. “Find a friend and race the Dove Creek course against other teams  The races are held on public roads which are not closed to traffic. Cyclists must obey the rules of the road and are responsible for their own safety.”

Anyone can participate and there is no cost to race although you must hold a valid Cycling BC licence, be a Cycling BC Associate member and be a member of the Comox Valley Cycle Club.  CVCC membership is $20 for adults and free for juniors under 18 years old. If you are not a member of the CVCC but would like to give the time trials a try a one-day licence may be purchased on-site.

Results will be announced at the completion of each race, and draw prizes from Trail Bicycles will be given out.  Results will be posted on the CVCC website.

The CVCC has other great events coming soon, including the Dove Creek road race on April 30. Check the website at comoxvalleycycleclub.blogspot.com for more information.
