The Comox Valley Cycle Club held the Dove Creek Stage Race on May 24. It was a time-based stage race consisting of the Dove Creek road race in the morning and the Burns Road time trial in the afternoon. The race included A, B and C categories as well as an Under 13 category.
Thirty-eight cyclists competed in the event, including many local riders as well as members from Victoria-based Russ Hayes Cycling Team, Triple Shot and Victoria Wheelers, as well as Maple Ridge-based Local Ride Cycling Team.
The Category A riders raced an 85.34km road race in the morning. Experienced riders made the race interesting with a number of attacks, although none were able to stay away for long. First place finisher was Steven Grandy who finished in a time of 2:15:07 in a sprint over second place Gary Mac Gregor. Third place went to James Grant.
The Category B race was 68.84km and had the biggest field of riders, including many local and out-of-town juniors. The pack stayed together till the finish, with David Dunnison taking first in the sprint finish in a time of 1:48:31 over Trevor Perkins (second) and Ray Wagner (third).
The Category C race was 52.34km and included only two riders who started the race with the B group. Chuck Sinclair took first place in a time of 1:44:29 over Mike Mann.
In the 8.06km Burns Road time trial, A Grade rider Steven Grandy had the fastest time of 0:12:12.
The overall results were: A Grade – 1st Steven Grandy, 2nd Gary Mac Gregor, 3rd Mick Bryson. B Grade – 1st David Dunnison, 2nd (tie) Trevor Perkins and Ray Wagner, 4th Mike Sevcov. C Grade – 1st Chuck Sinclair U13 – Evan Luksay.
On the weekend of June 7-8 the Comox Valley Cycle Club is holding the BC Provincial Youth Road Race Championships and the BC Time Trial Championships.
