Twenty-five members of the Comox Valley martial arts group Axé Capoeira attended the 15 year anniversary international celebration of Capoeira in Victoria, March 27-29.
Students ages six-66 participated in martial arts, dance and music workshops and demonstrations. Members of the Comox Valley group train two to four days per week and earned their new cordas (or belts) at the event during the ceremony known as the Batizado.
Leader of the Comox Valley sector of Axé Capoeira, Alicia Fennell was recognized for her contribution to the art form through teachings in the Valley with her Graduation corda. The honour was presented by Master of the group, Mestre Barrao. Graduada Alicia is now recognized as one of only six official female leaders within the group worldwide. The other five reside in USA, Brazil, Poland, Russia and Victoria, B.C.
Many of the Comox Valley students, especially kids, are now recognized throughout the world for their passion and skills developed right here in the Valley, and the academy has put Comox Valley on the Brazilian cultural map.
Axé Capoeira Comox Valley has officially committed to holding its first Axé Capoeira Batizado and Festival of Brazilian arts in 2016. This includes workshops, theatrical show, Brazilian dance party and of course special guest masters and teachers from around the world.
“It’s been a long time coming,” says Graduada Alicia, “but we are more than ready to host this incredible first-class celebration here in Comox Valley with full collaboration from our affiliate groups in Victoria and Vancouver.”
