Comox Valley United is gearing up for a busy second half of their Vancouver Island Soccer League season.
The men’s squad is in second place in Div. 2 with an 8-2-3 record and five games left to play. While catching first-place Saanich Fusion (12-0-2) may be outside shot, United is eyeing a second-place finish.
Also vying for second place is Westcastle (7-3-3) who are just three points back of the Comox Valley squad. “This is going to be a fight to the finish,” a United spokesperson said.
United’s next home games is Jan. 19 (2 p.m. Valley View) against sixth-place Gordon Head Blazers (3-6-4).
In other news, three United players were selected to the Div. 2 team for this weekend’s all-star games in Victoria. Brian Gage, Gokhan Avcil and Clay Fauchon have opted not to play in the game, but did well in earning the all-star nod.
The Jackson Cup draw is now complete, and United will be in tough in their first match as they will face Div. 1 Bays United (5-1-4) who sit in fifth place.
United must win this play-in game to advance to the round play. Date and location of the game has yet to be announced, but early February is open on the calendar.
