Comox Valley United VISL Div. 3B team wins, Div. 1 squad loses

Deuces were wild for Comox Valley United in weekend Vancouver Island Soccer League action.

Div. 3B United blanked Saanich Braves 2-0 on a pair of goals by Shawn Tutin and Jon Schmidt’s second shutout of the season, while Div. 1 United fell 2-1 to Cowichan.

“We redeemed ourselves from a tough loss last week,” said Div. 3B coach Jerret Dickinson of his team’s Oct. 9 outing in Courtenay.

“After hitting the cross bar four times and the post twice, we decided that we’d best aim for the middle.” Tutin was named game MVP as he pocketed both goals for Comox.

“The first goal was in the 38th minute in the first half with a stellar left foot,” Dickinson said. “He then gave us the insurance goal at minute 67.

“The 2-0 shutout gives Jon his second clean sheet in five games. Honourable mention goes to Blair Woods for not retaliating when deliberately engaged by the opposition. A simple walk away spoke volumes to the discipline he has shown. Well done Blair,” Dickinson said, adding the team thanks the fans for their support.

With the win, United improved to 2-3-0 and is now tied with Gorge (2-3-0) for fourth place in the 10-team Div. 3B circuit. This Saturday they are away to Lakehill (0-2-1) who are tied for sixth place.

Meanwhile, Div. 1 United is still looking for their first win of the season after falling 2-1 to Cowichan on Oct. 8 in Courtenay.

Ben Collin tallied the home team’s only goal and was named Comox Valley Rookie. Luke Phye was Comox Valley MVP. Mike Boulton scored both Cowichan goals.

United (0-3-1) is now seventh in the 10-team Div. 1 standings. This Saturday they host third-place Vic West (2-0-2) in a 6 p.m. start at the Vanier Turf Field.
