Comox flag-bearer Tracy Howlett-Cooney carried the Invictus Games flag on the first stop of its 37-day journey to Toronto.

The retired corporal received the ceremonial flag Thursday at CFB Comox, from where it will visit 22 Canadian Armed Forces, 15 legions and 50-some communities en route to Toronto.

The Games — an adaptive sport event for injured, ill or wounded veterans — run from Sept. 23 to 30. Howlett-Cooney will compete in rowing, cycling and wheelchair basketball. She will be joined in Toronto by fellow Comox Valley residents Dale Robillard (golf), Harry Reddin (cycling and swimming), Stephane Roy (wheelchair basketball) and Mimi Poulin (swimming and cycling).

Established by Prince Harry, the inaugural Invictus Games took place in London, England in September 2014. This year’s event will feature 550 competitors from 17 nations participating in 12 adaptive sports, including, for the first time, golf.
