Darrien Broomfield reeled in two touchdown passes as the Fulton Maroons bowed 55-26 to the host Duchess Park Condors of Prince George in high school varsity football play Saturday night.
Broomfield snared eight- and 35-yard tosses from Grade 9 quarterback Ike Olson for Fulton, who had 18 junior varsity players in their lineup. Caden Doyle added a 12-yard reception from Olson and Taran Lafond scampered in on an eight-yarder to complete the attack.
Despite the score, the Fulton staff was happy with the effort.
“Our young kids did a good job of competing against a very good Duchess team that should win the Northern Conference,” said Fulton head coach Mike Scheller. “Last week, we were not happy with our intensity or effort. We got better on Friday night and will continue to do so. Our passing game looked pretty good and we were able to run the ball late in the game.”
Scheller added the Maroons played well defensively, but need to tighten up as they got burned on some big plays, including several long passes.
Lafond was lights-out at running back and kick returner, rushing for 78 yards.
Olson took over in the second half and went 5-for-8. Scheller said he was very calm under pressure in leading the offence efficiently. Defensive end Sikandar Ahmad showed leadership and dedication, and defensive tackle Connor Annesley was a force on the inside.
The Fulton juniors host the Valleyview Vikings of Kamloops today, at 4 p.m., at Grahame Park, while the senior Maroons entertain the Westsyde Blue Wave of Kamloops Saturday at noon.
