The UBC Okanagan Heat’s CIS women’s basketball home opener didn’t go exactly as planned Friday night at UBC Okanagan gym.
Facing the No. 1-ranked University of Regina Cougars, the Heat fell 91-66, dipping to 0-5 in Canada West conference play.
Up by nine after the first quarter, the Cougars (6-0) went on a 17-point streak to take a 49-29 lead into the break and never looked back.
“I thought the girls did pretty good tonight considering the competition,” said Heat head coach Heather Semeniuk. “I’m pretty happy with the way they played.”
Third-year guard Michelle Clark led Regina with 14 points, while five other Cougars reached double digits.
The Heat were led by fourth-year guard Madison Kaneda, a Vernon product, with a game-high 15 points and 29 minutes.
Second-year Krystal Schouten (Winnipeg) and fourth-year Roslyn Huber (Kelowna) added 10 points each.
Vernon’s Emily Kanester had six points.
The Heat entertained the 0-7 University of Brandon Bobcats Saturday night.
The Bobcats bowed 114-58 to the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Friday night at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops.
It is the first time a TRU women’s team has recorded 100 points in a game since they joined CIS seven years ago.
The WolfPack, now 3-4, were up 31-20 after the first quarter and led 57-31 at recess.
TRU had six players in double figures, including Vernon Panthers’ grad Diane Schuetze, who delivered 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Jen Ju (4th year, guard, Vancouver) had 20 points.
Vernon’s Britney Walton, a rookie forward, collected her first CIS basket and added a steal in four minutes of playing time for TRU.
“Brit is battling a little bit of shin splints right now so we had to limit her minutes. She was effective in guarding Brandon’s top player,” said TRU coach Scott Reeves.
