Courtenay Whalers women’s hockey team enjoying successful season

The Courtenay Whalers women’s hockey team resumed regular play this past weekend in a local game against the Comox Breakers.

The game started slowly, but the Whalers were the first to find the back of the net at 9:18 in the first period.  The Breakers quickly answered, scoring at 7:40.  The Breakers followed up with another goal, which the Whalers answered by adding two more goals before the end of the first period to lead 3-2.

The next two periods saw heavy offensive Whaler action in the Breakers’ end, and the Whalers capitalized on many opportunities, leading to an 11-3 victory.

Another season highlight for the Whalers was the recent trip to Port Hardy for the annual Port Hardy Wild Hockey Tournament.  The Whalers played hard for five games, and finished the tournament in first place, beating the host team in the gold medal game.

The Whalers next home game will be at Sports Centre #2 against the Comox Breakers, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

This week, the Whalers travel to Victoria on Jan. 20 to play in the highly anticipated Pacific Cup tournament.  This tournament is celebrating its 40th anniversary and will have upwards of 140 local and visiting adult recreational hockey teams playing.

The Whalers thank their sponsors, Brian McLean Chevrolet Buick GMC Limited, Stinson Aerial Services Inc. and Courtenay Motorsport, for their continued support for the 2016-2017 season.
