Empire Spikes Back… Again takes Golden Ball

After coping with several rainy and grey Wednesday nights, the Cowichan Outdoor Volleyball League wrapped up the 2017 season on a hot and sunny evening on the Brentwood College School fields late last month.

“It has been tough this year for sure,” veteran player Colin Hutchinson remarked. “We have been lucky in the past to almost always have sunny Wednesdays but this year was a bit cooler. However, we were able to get all our games in except for one week.”

COVL organizer and player Darian Achurch was pleased with the way the teams battled through the unfortunate weather all spring. A record 40 teams competed for trophies in eight divisions, maxing out the 16 courts reserved for the league.

“We can’t really grow any more,” Achurch noted. “Unless we change venues and buy more nets, 40 teams is just perfect for our local league.”

Achurch’s own team, the Empire Spikes Back… Again, claimed the Golden Ball as the overall season winner.
