Coach Bob Beatty couldn’t explain the Cowichan Valley Capitals’ 9-0 loss to the Powell River Kings at home last Friday.

“It’s one of those games when you’ve gotta have a short memory and put it out of the way,” he said. “It’s not something we’re proud of.”

The Kings scored one goal in the first period, three in the second and five in the third. Ben Berard — a Duncan product who skated in six games for the Capitals over the last two seasons as an affiliate, then signed on with the Kings over the summer — scored the opening goal and eventual game winner, and added an assist, while Brian Wilson made 23 saves for the shutout. Lane Michasiw made 40 saves in the Cowichan net.

Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of the West Kelowna Warriors was a slight improvement.

“I wouldn’t say we were terribly pleased with the result,” he said. “We played a strong third period, but a loss is a loss.”

After a scoreless opening period, the Kings scored three times in a three-minute span midway through the second, including a pair of powerplay goals. Rhett Kingston responded for the Caps two minutes after that outburst, and Ayden MacDonald scored the only goal of the third period with 46 seconds left in the game after Beatty pulled goalie Adam Marcoux for an extra skater. Marcoux finished the game with 32 saves.

The Caps host the Vernon Vipers this Friday and the Chilliwack Chiefs on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
