Cowichan Cougars handed first loss of soccer season

Div. 2 women's soccer team beaten by Castaways

The Cowichan Cougars suffered their first loss of the O30A women’s soccer season last Sunday when first-place Castaways defeated them 4-1 at Evans Park.

“The score was definitely not indicative of the game,” Cowichan coach Darian Achurch noted. “I would say it was a 2-1 type of game at best.”

Ashley Stultz opened the scoring by finishing off a nifty passing play with a shot to the bottom corner of the Castaways net. Castaways drew even soon after with a header that beat Courtenay Matheson, who was filling in for injured keeper Sara Tweten.

Castaways kept pushing for goals as the first half continued, burying a lucky rebound after Matheson made the initial save, and scoring again on a volley from the top of the penalty area.

“That was a one in a million shot,” Cowichan player Stacey De Lusignan remarked. “You usually only see those on Sportscentre.”

The Cougars created chances of their own as the game carried on, but only Castaways scored, adding one more late goal against the flow. Still tied for third, Cowichan could move into second place when they host Gorge this Sunday at 10 a.m. at Evans Park.

Cowichan’s Div. 2 women’s team was dealt a second straight loss, falling 4-0 to Vic West at Sherman Road last Friday night.

For most of the match, Cowichan strung passes together and moved the ball up the field with strong plays on the outside.

“Our defence kept Vic West honest by being aggressive on the ball and keeping the shots to a minimum,” coach Darbi Aitchison said.

Vic West was able to pull ahead gradually.

“We let them shoot a few too many times and they got some good shots off, and a couple lucky ones,” Aitchison said.

The Div. 2 team will visit Prospect Lake on Sunday morning.
