Scholefield has been competing in the Special Olympics for several years. In 2001, she made it to provincials in soccer. She’s also competed as a bowler and softball player, making to provincials to more times, in 2005 and 2009, and nationals in 2006.

This will be Black’s first year competing in the Special Olympics. Both athletes plan on competing in five-pin bowling and floor hockey. Regionals will take place later this year, with subsequent qualifiers, including provincials and nationals, to take place thereafter, concluding in the worldwide competition.

This was the duo’s first fund-raising attempt at the Country Grocer.

“People have been great, and very supportive,” local Special Olympics executive Jean Scholefield said, adding that they  may return at some point in the future.
