The Cowichan Piggies continued their hot streak with a 45-27 win at home over the Port Alberni Black Sheep last Saturday.

The victory was the first home win of the spring for the First Division rugby squad after back-to-back road victories in recent weeks.

“Our boys were ready, fired up before the game,” head coach Andrew Wright said. “The guys were ready to defend their home park.”

The Piggies collected four points for the win and a bonus point for scoring at least four tries. Alberni brought an injury-depleted pack to the Herd Road pitch, but still battled hard.

“It was a good game,” Wright said. “Port Alberni put their all into it; they never give up up there.”

Cowichan’s tries came from Noah Dobson, Kyle Joe, Randy Barton, Scott McLeod, Danny Hamstra and Jenner Teufel, who also slotted five of six conversion attempts. The team was missing a couple of key players, including captain Robbie McDonnell, but a strong bench helped offset the absences.

“That’s starting to come into play more as the season progresses,” Wright commented. “Our depth is helping us out tremendously.”

The Piggies are off this week as the B.C. rugby community focuses on the Vancouver Sevens. Both the men’s and women’s Cowichan teams host Westshore on March 18. The Piggies are now tied with Nanaimo atop the Island First Division standings, with Westshore nipping at their heels.
