It just wasn’t Cowichan’s day as the home team lost 72-12 to No.1-ranked Westshore in a women’s rugby Premiership match at the Herd Road pitch last Saturday.

“We couldn’t get anything going offensively,” Cowichan forward Sherry Spence lamented. “Even when we had a few good phases of rugby it ended in a knock-on. Realistically, it was a long shot to upset Westshore; they have their style of play down to an art. Something to strive for, that’s for sure.”

Rebecca Kerswell scored Cowichan’s first try, and visiting national team player Kayla Mack dotted down the other, which Kelly Russell, another national team player, converted. Laura Russell and Jenna Bugden were picked by Westshore as Cowichan’s players of the game.

Neither Russell sister, nor Tyson Beukeboom nor Natasha Smith will be available to Cowichan over the next two weeks as they attend national team camp at Shawnigan Lake School, hoping to be picked for the travelling team that will face the U.S. for the two-match Can-Am Series in San Diego later this month.

Cowichan will face the No.2 team in the Premiership over the next two weeks, beginning with a home match against Seattle this Saturday at noon.
