Calling their event “Lace Up for Cancer,” the peewee C1 Cowichan Kings got together with the C3 Chiefs and the junior Caps for a scrimmage at the Island Savings Centre last Saturday, and gathered together for a photo that will be shared on social media to raise awareness and encourage people to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“It all started from the players,” Kings coach Dustin Syrenne said. “They said they wanted to do something for one of the kids after his grandpa was diagnosed with cancer.”

In addition to the Caps, the event also received support from Sport Chek, Crofton Shop & Wash, and Living Stones Interlocking Brick, with photographer Rick Ruppenthal taking the image that they hope goes viral.

Even before the photo was taking, Syrenne was amazed by the response.

“It’s a lot bigger than we thought it would be,” he said.

The photo will be shared on a variety of social media, including the Capitals’ and Cowichan Valley Citizen Facebook pages. Syrenne has also contacted several NHL teams
