Cowichan Valley players help Team BC to national lacrosse medals

Thunder products come home with bantam silver and midget bronze

Two Cowichan Valley players represented B.C. at the national box lacrosse championships earlier this month, both coming home with medals.

Josh MacDonald came back from the Canadian Lacrosse Association National Championships in Calgary with a silver medal from the bantam tournament, and Devyn Zunti returned with a bronze.

MacDonald missed Team BC’s first three games at nationals while serving out a suspension from a Cowichan Valley Thunder game, but made an impact in the four games he did play, scoring three goals and adding two assists for five points, including two goals in the gold-medal game on Aug. 14.

B.C. led Ontario 5-4 in the third period of the final, but Ontario came back to pull ahead 6-5, then added an empty netter to make it 7-5.

This was MacDonald’s second trip to nationals after winning a bronze medal in the peewee tournament in 2016. He also played for Team BC in the Sandstorm field tournament in Palm Springs last winter.

Zunti was also making his second trip to nationals after placing fourth in bantam two years ago. Zunti’s team made it to the bronze-medal game once again, clobbering Nova Scotia 10-1 to finish third.

Zunti had a goal and an assist in the third-place game on Aug. 18, and finished with seven points on two goals and five assists in eight games.

Both players also won medals with Vancouver Island-Central Coast teams at the Cowichan 2018 BC Summer Games, Zunti taking gold in box lacrosse and MacDonald silver in field.
