A shorthanded Cowichan team was unable to keep up with a young Comox team in a First Division women’s rugby tilt at the Cowichan Rugby Football Club pitch last Saturday.
The Piggies had just 13 players available for the match, which Comox agreed to match. The first half went back and forth, with both teams scoring three times. Speedsters Carolyn Gudmundseth and Rikki Wylie had the Cowichan tries, with two and one, respectively.
Comox managed to pull away in the second half after a key Piggy was sidelined.
“We lost Carolyn to injury, which is always tough because of her speed and leadership,” Cowichan player Sherry Spence commented.
Tyson Beukeboom scored two second-half tries for Cowichan, but Comox countered with five converted efforts.
Wylie and Kaelyn Palmer shared Player of the Game honours.
The Cowichan women’s team will be at home again this Saturday, facing Westshore at 11:15 a.m.
