Coyotes win three in Nanaimo

Okanagan College wins Canadian College Baseball Conference series against Vancouver Island Baseball Insitute

After a split on Saturday in Nanaimo, one run in the fourth inning was all Okanagan College starter Tanner Collins would need as the Coyoes shutout the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute (VIBI) Mariners 1-0 in Canadian College Baseball Conference action.

Collins was the story of the game, throwing a complete game shutout for his first win of the campaign.  He scattered six hits and struck out eight on route to the victory.

The Coyotes scored their lone run in the top of the fourth as Garrett Wiese scored an unearned run following his one out walk.  The offense only tallied three hits.

In Game 2 of the Sunday doubleheader, the Coyotes needed 11 innings to defeat the Mariners 9-5 and win three of four over the weekend in Nanaimo.

After the Mariners jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first two innings, the Coyotes clawed back, with single runs in the third and fourth innings on a bases loaded walk and a Joel Lamont RBI base hit.

In the top of the 11th, the Coyotes scored four times with two out to seal the victory.  Three of the four runs were unearned and Brock Chilton recorded an RBI single.

Brandon Becking collected his first win of the spring, coming on in relief and throwing two perfect innings.

The Coyotes pounded 18 hits in the ball game. Wiese collected three hits and three RBIs, while Adam Gasiorowski finished with four hits.  Derek Shedden, Joel Lamont and Chilton each had multi-hit games.

The Coyotes (7-8), who have won five of their last six will return home and open the CCBC Easter Weekend tournament on Friday.
