Cranbrook Eagles to host novice boxing tournament

Over 80 novice fighters expected at local boxing club’s weekend event.

The Cranbrook Eagles Boxing Club will be hosting a combined Bronze and Silver Gloves tournament for novice fighters from April 22 to 23 at the Ktunaxa gym.

The “Tomorrow’s Champions” tourney is the combination of two annual contests put on by Boxing BC and is normally held on separate weekends, but the Eagles have transformed it into one large event.

“Right now, there are 80 [competitors] that are entered,” said Eagles coach Bill Watson. “We’re expecting clubs from all over Alberta, all over BC and also there’s two clubs coming from Washington, one out of Spokane and one out of Seattle.

“There are going to be some good, talented boxers showcasing their talents.”

The event will kick off at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, and go until around 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. before starting again on Sunday at noon and going until around 2:00 p.m.

Seven boxers will be representing the local Eagles club at the tournament, including Sierra Pearson, Cheyenne Pearson, Alexa Hanson, Dylan Muhllig, Payton Muhllig, Nike Blackmore, and Conner Ferrier.

“I expect all seven of our boxers to get at least one match over that weekend,” Watson said. “What’s really exciting is that both Cheyenne [Pearson] and Conner [Ferrier] will be stepping into the ring for the first time [and] there’s also going to be match bouts with open boxers — that is anybody that has had 11 or more fights is considered an open boxer — so there are going to be some very good [fights].

“One of them that we have is Dylan Muhllig, who is having his eleventh fight on that weekend.”

The event is open to the public and is all general admission with tickets available at the door for $10 each.
