Cranbrook’s White Tiger Taekwondo competed at the Okanagan Championships in Kelowna on April 8 and brought home a lot of hardware.
Taking their largest delegation ever — 21 students competing in seven different events — Cranbrook won a total of 76medals, meddling in every event.
The seven events included: sparring (full contact fighting), Poomsae (traditional taekwondo forms), jumping front kick (based on the highest marked kick), flying side kick (based on the longest distance jumped), power breaking (based on the most boards broken), team Poomsae (an open form with multiple competitors), and weapons forms (an open form with traditional martial arts weapons such as the ‘Jahng Bong’ or bo staff).
White Tiger won 23 golds, 35 silvers, and 16 bronzes at the Kelowna championship tournament.
The majority of their success came in the sparring and weapons events, in which there were over 102 competitors overall vying for the top spots.
“Students trained very hard for [those] events,” according to the club’s Master Steve Desjardin. It was the White TigerTaekwondo club’s final tournament of the 2016-17 season.
