Creston Wave Swim Club earns gold and bronze in Trail

Creston Wave members Jake Wiens, Carter Pelly, Katelyn Wiens and coach Kieran Simpson earn medals at Trail swim meet...

On Saturday and Sunday, the Creston Wave Swim Club competed at its first swim meet of the season in Trail. Eleven swimmers competed at the meet, and four brought home medals for placing in the top three overall in their division. The Creston Wave started training the first week of May, and for the past five weeks had been preparing for the first meet of the season.

The hard work and training paid off, as all swimmers achieved best times in at least two of their six races. Kaine Gauthier, swimming in his first meet, placed in the top four in all of his novice 25-metre races. Alexandra Brown and Ethan Pelly, who were also at their first-ever meet, competed in Div. 1. Alexandra swam hard, finishing top five in two of her events. Ethan had fast arms and a strong pull, finishing top five in three of his races.

Returning swimmer Jake Wiens, who raced in a competitive boys Div. 3, had a great meet, obtaining four best times, and placing in the top three in three of his events, which got him the bronze medal in his category.

Kate Page, a Div. 4 girl, took an impressive six seconds off her 50-metre butterfly, and five seconds off her 100-metre freestyle. Kate also placed in the top five in two events.

Another Div. 4 swimmer, Spencer Kilmartin, swam his fastest time ever in all of his events, taking over eight second in his 50-metre butterfly. He also placed in the top five in all of his events.

Kylee Pemberton achieved the most personal bests this weekend with five, and also finished in the top five in three of her Div. 6 races.

Coach Kieran Simpson came first in all six of his events, earning gold for Div. 7 boys.

Katelyn Wiens, in Div. 6, had great starts, which propelled her to five top three finishes. Katelyn also received the bronze medal for the Div. 6 girls.

Creston’s fourth medal winner was Carter Pelly, who came either first or second in all her events, ensuring her gold in the girls Div. 5. She also swam four best times over the weekend.

Overall, it was a successful first meet for the team. The Creston Wave finished seventh of nine teams.

On June 12, the team is off to Grand Forks for a meet. The following weekend, June 18 and 19, the Wave will be hosting a meet in Creston.
