The Creston Wave Swim Club was back in the pool on July 9 and 10, this time in Castlegar. Twelve swimmers competed over the weekend, and four earned medals in their categories.

Two novices competed for the Wave in Castlegar. Kaine Gauthier swam two personal bests over the weekend. In his 25-metre backstroke, Kaine took off over 20 seconds. Aleena also swam hard enough to get two best times. She competed on the Div. 3 girls relay team, as well, which finished fourth in the medley relay and fifth in the freestyle relay.

Callum Ziefflie, Ethan Pelly and Alex Hopkins all competed in the Div. 1 boys category. Callum placed second in three of his races, just missing out on a medal. Ethan placed fifth in his 50-metre freestyle, and swam a huge best time. Alex finished fifth in his 100-metre freestyle, and swam two best times. All three boys also competed on the Div. 7 boys relay team.

Anna Morris competed in Div. 2. She finished top six in three events, and in one even finished third.

Natasha Hopkins competed in the same division as Anna. She finished the meet with a fourth place finish, and three third place finishes. Natasha also was awarded the bronze medal for Div. 2 girls.

Maryn Wiens finished fifth in both her 50-metre freestyle and 100-metre freestyle. Maryn also swam a best time in all of her races.

Kylee Pemberton made finals in all of her races. Kylee finished fifth three times, and had one fourth-place finish.

Kailey Morris and Carter Pelly competed in Div. 5. Kailey finished fourth twice and third twice. She also received the bronze medal in the division. Carter finished first in three of her events, and second in one. Carter swam fast enough to tie for gold in the Div. 5 girls category.

Coach Kieran Simpson also tied for the gold medal, but in the Div. 7 boys category, after finishing first three times and second in one race.

The Wave also competed in Castlegar’s annual mile swim relay. The team of eight consisted of Callum, Anna, Natasha, Maryn, Kailey, Carter, Kylee and Kieran. The team took turns swimming 50 metres until they had completed a mile. They finished the mile in 22:56.94.

The Wave finished seventh in the mile relay and in overall team standings. This weekend the team will head to Colville, Wash., for a meet.
