When Andrew Armstrong participates in the BC Summer Games next week, he’ll be following in a family tradition — his mom, Carrie, played basketball in the Games as a teenager.

“My mom went when she was my age and really enjoyed it,” said the 13-year-old.

Armstrong will compete in the triathlon (swim-bike-run), duathlon (run-bike-run) and aquathlon (swim-run), events for which he’s well suited, having competed with his parents and brother in the Wasa Lake Triathlon since he was a child, although that’s far from the only activity he enjoys.

“I take part in most school sports,” he said. “I do soccer outside of school. And because I have a dog, I do a lot of running.”

He hasn’t done a lot of specific training for the Games, but between the running, swimming and other sports, he’s feeling ready. And he’s hoping to have a good time when he competes.

“I’m not expecting to get a medal or anything,” he said. “It’s just for the experience.”
