Cricket back on the North Coast

The sport of cricket will be bringing some eastern influence back to Prince Rupert athletics this summer, with the league continuing for a third year.

It turns out cricket, which is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players, is quite the popular sport in a city dominated by basketball. Prabhjot Singh, whose role with the league is to bring everybody together, said they always have more than 30 players.

“It’s fun and refreshes the mind. We are cricket freaks, that’s what we are born for,” he said.

Cricket is an interesting game, which adds to the draw of it, he said. People should come out and try it because it’s fun and not too difficult to learn.

“Just to enjoy and have fun. It’s not hard, it’s an easy game. It’s like baseball, the same kind of thing. Our game is just tossing the ball on the ground instead, then you hit,” Singh said.

The game is played every Sunday at 1:30 p.m., either on the Charles Hays Secondary School (CHSS) field or at Roosevelt Park Elementary School. It will begin the first or second week of April, depending on the weather.

“The main thing is we want more people to come and join us and we welcome all cultures,” Singh said.
