Nerves played a role in a sluggish start for the Fraser Valley foursome of Dezaray Hawes, Jaymee Lynn, Cailin Cooke and Everly Royea.But by the time their BC Winter Games curling opener was over, the scoreboard read 14-5 and the butterflies were banished.It’s hard to believe Dezaray and company briefly trailed in this one, falling behind 3-1 after two ends.“We started out a little shaky until we found our weight and line, and it was mostly nerves,” said third Cailin Cooke. “This isn’t the same as a normal provincial tournament, with so many people. But after a while, you get over it and you’re good.”Her team equalized with two in the third end, then blew it open, tacking five on the board in the fourth.“We were a little light, biting on the edge of the house, and we didn’t even have the hammer in that end,” Cooke said. “But when they missed their last shot we looked and it was, ‘Oh! We’ve got five here.’ It’s so nice, but then you get really excited and you’ve got to calm your nerves all over again for the next shot.”Not a problem as they scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the match well out of reach.Their next shots take place at 6:30 p.m. when they face Bailey Tinkler’s Vancouver Island – Central Coast rink.
