With the teams determined and the venue being prepared, the 2015 B.C. Junior Curling Championships are getting set to rock at the Parksville Curling Club Dec. 28-Jan. 3.
Sixteen of the best junior men’s and women’s teams (eight in each group) from across the province will do battle on the sheets of ice, looking to win their respective titles.
In all, there are members from all three women’s medal-winning teams that will be back again this year and three teams in total that call Vancouver Island home, all hailing from Victoria.
Three-quarters of the reigning women’s team — skip Sarah Daniels, third Marika Van Osch and lead Megan Daniels — are back to defend their title with a new teammate, second Dezaray Hawes.
Team Brown, who won silver last year, were national champions just two years ago as well and will be looking for another strong performance. The bronze medal team in 2014 has Shawna Jensen as their skip, boasting a team with three other curlers from three different locations.
On the men’s side, Team Tanaka is coming in hot after a victory over Team Horvath, which featured two members of the 2014 gold medal winning team.
Compared to the women’s side of the event, there are lots of new teams coming in to the championships for the first time.
The event is free to attend and the finals will be televised on Rogers Sportsnet, which take place January 3, 2015.
