The Blue Steel Brew got three touchdowns from Jessica May to defeat the Winter Trucking Storm 34-20 as the Cowichan Women’s Football League squeezed in some midweek games before taking the long weekend off.
Caitlin Evans opened the scoring for the Storm with a 55-yard touchdown run that Kristen Labao finished off with the extra point. BSB quickly turned the tide as May scored the first of her team’s three straight majors, and it was 21-7 before the Storm were able to get on the board again.
After a sack by Stacey Mohun-Smith, Shylayne Davidson scored the Storm’s next touchdown in the third quarter, with another convert by Labao. Once again BSB responded, going up 34-14 before Labao scored a major of her own to narrow the gap to 14 points. A big interception by Julie Martin had the Storm making a late charge before time ran out.
For BSB, May also had a pair of sacks alongside fellow rusher Aldea Wood. Heidi Haslam also had a sack and an interception on defence, and caught a second-half touchdown pass and three converts from quarterback Michelle Nederlof,
Kara Olson and Shelby Wilcox also had touchdowns for BSB, and Wilcox and Michaela Peet also had converts.
In the other Wednesday game, the Law ended the Crew’s season-long winning streak with a 13-13 tie, although the Crew could still call themselves undefeated.
Jaimie Olson and Leanne Closson scored touchdowns for the Law and Kim Scafe had a convert. On defence, Jodi Buttle recorded three sacks, and Closson had an interception.
