DBL men get to watch Canucks on TV

The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen are Vancouver Canucks fans, and so are their opponents, it seems.

The city’s senior B lacrosse team was originally scheduled to play the Valley Rebels in Abbotsford on Friday (June 10), but the Rebels decided they’d rather watch the Stanley Cup finals that night. What’s more, they agreed to give up the home date entirely and make up the game Sunday in Nanaimo.

It works out perfectly for the DBL Timbermen and their fans – the Rebels wouldn’t have visited the Nanaimo Ice Centre at all this season otherwise, so local lacrosse fans get to see the T-men take on the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association’s first-placed team.

The two squads met last weekend in Parksville in a strange 3-2 win for Valley, so Nanaimo coach Roger Dubyna said his players would work on shooting this week at practice.

The T-men are finding good areas on the floor to shoot from, said the coach, but they need to make the most of the quality scoring chances they’re generating.

“A lot of guys have such a habit of going high all the time, to the top corner,” he said. “But a lot of times that’s not the best spot to be shooting because that’s where the goalie’s the widest.”

GAME ON … The DBL Timbermen (3-3) play the Chilliwack Mustangs (1-7) on Saturday on the mainland, then host the Valley Rebels (7-0) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the NIC.
