The Duncan Christian School Chargers senior boys volleyball team beat Gulf Islands Secondary in three straight sets in a prelude to the Vancouver Island University Mariners’ four-match sweep of the Camosun Chargers in the DCS gym on Sept. 20.

The Chargers beat GISS 25-12, 25-11, 25-17 to make a statement about their season plans, and the Mariners beat Camosun 25-22, 25-15, 25-19, 25-22.

“DCS is hoping to bring home a [provincial] blue banner this year,” Duncan Christian athletic director Tom Veenstra said.  “Most of the team is in Grade 12 and have played together for many years.”

DCS also played host to the VIU and Camosun women’s teams on Oct. 4, while the DCS junior and senior squads took on the Lake Cowichan Lakers.

The DCS junior girls were beaten by their Lake Cowichan opponents, falling 25-20 in the third set after improving as the match went on. The DCS senior girls swept their three games against the Lakers, coming back to win 26-24 in the first set before winning 25-14 and 25-17.

The VIU women defeated Camosun in a marathon match that lasted more than two hours. Camosun, which includes Brentwood College School grad Allie Waddell, won the first two sets 26-24, 25-20, but the Mariners came back to prevail in the next three, 25-17, 25-21, 15-8.

Led by provincial team player Danielle Groenendijk and Island all-star setter Hannah Day, the DCS Chargers have won three of the last four Island single-A girls titles, including the last two in a row.

Both the DCS boys and girls teams will be hosting their Island championship tournaments in November.
