Deep field of teams for Western Canada tourney

Top-ranked teams from all western provinces will be in Kelowna next month for senior boys basketball tournament

One of the strongest collections of teams and some of the best individual talent in recent memory will take to the court Feb. 5 to 7 at KSS for the 42nd Interior Savings Western Canada Basketball Tournament.

Including the host Owls, all four B.C. teams are currently ranked in the top 10 among 4A schools—No. 2 Burnaby South, No. 6 Winston Churchill and No. 10 Cowichan.

All four out-of-province schools and ranked in the top three. Regina’s Dr. Martin LeBoldus Golden Suns are the top-ranked team in Saskatchewan, while the Harry Ainley Titans and Bishop O’Byrne Bobcats are ranked second and third, respectively, in Alberta.

Round out the field is Winnipeg’s Oak Park Raiders, the No. 2 ranked program in Manitoba.

“It’s close to, if not the best (field) I’ve ever seen,” said Owls’ head coach Harry Parmar. “Every game will be just crazy…very competitive.

“It’s great because this tournament always sets you up for playoffs with some tough games and they’re all going to be tough.”

Action tips off at 2:30 on Thursday, Feb. 5, with the championship final set for Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7:45 p.m.

Also featured is the Slam Dunk Contest on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and the 3-Point Contest  on Friday at 7:30.
