The Okanagan Sun saw its undefeated season come to an end Saturday, losing 38-24 to the Saskatoon Hilltops in the Canadian Bowl.
Prior to the game, Sun head coach Shane Beatty identified stopping Hilltops running back Logan Fischer as a one of the keys to the game, but ultimately they weren’t able to do that as he had over 200 yards and two touchdowns.
“He rushed for 100 yards, and I think he had 100 yards receiving as well,” reflected defensive coordinator Mike Botterill. “The defines played their butts off, and unfortunately we didn’t make enough plays to win the game.”
The Sun held 20-17 lead at halftime, but were outscored 21-4 in the final two quarters.
“We came out and played a pretty strong first half,” Botterill noted. “Then they came out and had a great third quarter. I’ve got to give it to the boys, they left it out there on the field.”
While the the Sun wasn’t able to capture its third Canadian Junior Football League Championship, the team still met its goal of winning BC, and did so with a dominant season they can still take pride in.
“We all had high expectations, we wanted to go get a championship,” Botterill said. “It was a tough loss, but I’m proud of the team and the year, going 12-0 isn’t easy.”
