A trio of players from Vernon Secondary School was very impressive at a three-day football camp for senior high school players, hosted by the University of Calgary Dinos at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium.
Defensive ends Ben Hladik and Josh Hyer, along with outside linebacker Tyler Semeniuk, were among 95 players from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan to attend the camp.
“They (VSS) players are a great group of kids that work hard,”
said Matt Berry, recruiting coordinator for the University of Calgary.
Berry has seen the trio develop over the past couple of seasons with the Panthers.
“All of them have put the time into training and working out. They come from a great program Sean (Smith) has going at VSS. We would love to have them further their football careers at Calgary.”
All three are entering their senior seasons for the Panthers.
In addition to competing at the camp, all three players witnessed the Calgary Stampeders’ 35-15 CFL win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders the night before the camp.
Freshman linebacker and former Panther Carson Labrecque will be a freshman with the Dinos.
Meanwhile, the Panthers have released their fall schedule which will see them face the Robert Bateman Timberwolves of Abbotsford Friday, Sept. 9 at the Greater Vernon Athletics Park (3:30 p.m. kickoff).
The Cats will visit the powerful John Barsby Bulldogs Sept. 17 in Nanaimo and host the Abbotsford Panthers Saturday, Sept. 24 and entertain the Pitt Meadows Marauders Friday, Sept. 30 to finish their pre-season slate.
VSS opens league play Oct. 7 versus Seaton.
