Don’t be a dummy, attend Mt. Timothy’s open house

Dummy Races on March 27 will help bring a close to the ski and snowboard season at Mt. Timothy.

Put on your lei and grass skirt and come out to Mt. Timothy Ski Hill open house on March 27 starting at 11 a.m.

“The open house is a wrap-up for the year,” says Leslie Brown of guest services and the pro shop.

“It’s usually a Hawaiian theme, and it will be a chance to welcome people to tour our new building.”

She adds the existing building will be the day lodge and the new 4,000-square-foot building will house guest services, rentals, retail, and tech [repairs].

The new lodge, which will be open next season, features state-of-the-art, energy-efficient technology, such as radiant in-floor heating and double insulation, and it will cost little to heat the building.

It was built with a portion of a grant from the Community Adjustment Fund and Northern Development Initiative Trust.

Located east of Lac la Hache on Mt. Timothy Road, Mt Timothy Ski Society offers 35 runs for every age and level of ability. The latest snow report states the spring conditions include packed powder. There is a snow base of 162 centimetres at mid-mountain. For the latest snow report check out their website at www.skitimothy.com/snow.

“It’s been busy here, says Brown, we’ve had schools from all over the district having fun on our slopes.

“We have some great events still happening, including the big air competition on March 20 and the ongoing Monday madness (reduced ticket rates).”

The main fun event at the open house is the 2011 Dummy Race. Locals and staff are invited to make “dummies” on skis or boards and enter them in a race. More entries are welcome and people can sign up with guest services, says Brown.

“These dummies have to make it down the hill in as close to one piece as possible. It’s fun and the winners get bragging rights.”

Entries will be lined up for viewing before the “race,” which is expected to start around 1 p.m.
